Looking across the slope at the second infested tree. One problem with ivy is that it adds a lot of weight to the tree. And in the winter when all the trees have lost their leaves, the ivy is still green and full, which can act like a sail in the wind and pull down a tree that would normally survive a storm. Also, ivy goes to seed only when it's vertical, so by killing it off in the trees, we're preventing a lot of future ivy infestations. Some of the ivy vines that we cut were nearly 4 inches in diameter.
